Meet The Interns – Courtney Spencer
Age: 27
Hailing from: Originally England but grew up on the Hibiscus Coast, NZ.
Is this your first time in NZ? I’ve lived here on & off since I was 8.
How did you get into the wine industry? After university I travelled a lot and kept ending up in wine regions, volunteering doing wine jobs & I met some great people in the industry who convinced me. So, when I returned to NZ I decided to give it a go!
What has been your winemaking experience up until now? This is my 5th vintage, I’ve worked in Marlborough & Otago in NZ, London UK & Napa, CA in USA.
How did you hear about Greystone? From my friend Harriet who is an intern here!
What do you do for work back home? I travel the world doing this full time!
What is the most memorable wine you’ve ever tasted? My first sip of Brunello in Montalcino Italy. Blew my mind that wine could taste like that. I’ve also had a couple of birth year wines which were amazing!
What are you most looking forward to this upcoming vintage? I love a good plunge & dig out. Also meeting the team and sharing a glass of good wine together over harvest is always a highlight.
What is your favourite task in the winery? Definitely a dig out.
Did you grow up with wine in your family? Not really, I didn’t enjoy wine until I was around 20 actually!
What future aspirations do you have – in or out of the wine world? To never stop travelling & drinking great wine & coffee, hopefully write a travel book one day.
